Booming Growth

The group of Americans aged 55 and older now represent 1/4 of the population - 76.6 million people - up 21% since 2000. Experts predict that by 2014 that number will become 26%.

And get this... many of them are planning for a retirement centered in learning and nature. Golf is becoming passé with the aging boomer generation, coming in dead last in a survey of top-10 retirement goals conducted for a national association of homebuilders. Hiking and nature watching are gradually taking over.

The post-career destination of choice for the soon-to-retire set is still somewhere in the sun belt, but Florida is well down that list with North Carolina holding top spot.

National Bird-Feeding Society Revitalized

Established in 1989, the National Bird-Feeding Society has recently come under the stewardship of Wild Bird Centers of America which will help the organization to continue its mission. WBCA, the national chain of specialty shops, will serve as the Society’s primary sponsor while its daily management will be handled by the staff and students of Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. Dr. David Horn, Associate Professor of Biology, said “Millikin University is delighted to be a vital part of the National Bird Feeding Society. Students will have the opportunity to help millions of people gain a greater connection to the natural world, while providing students with real-world experience.”

The purpose of NBFS is “to make the latest backyard bird feeding information and resources available to the public” said George Petrides Sr., founder and chairman of WBCA. The first step in achieving that goal is a new web site (www.nbfs.org) which will be under the management of Stacey Shonkwiler at Millikin’s ornithological research lab. The site is designed as a resource that backyard birders of all ages can use to learn more about the birds in their backyard, and how to attract them.
